After our African drumming workshop with the Anasa Foundation, our students participated in a follow-up art workshop focused on West African ritual masks. During the workshop, students were introduced to the ritual uses and cultural significance of various masks within West African traditions. This inspired them to imagine and create their own masks, imbued with personal meaning.
Following the West African tradition of using found materials to create elaborately crafted masks, the students used cardboard to fashion three-dimensional, intricate, and colourful ritual masks. The masks reflected the individual personalities and creative visions of each student while paying homage to the rich cultural heritage of West Africa. This workshop was a fantastic opportunity for students to deepen their understanding and appreciation of African culture while exploring their own creativity.
